“老天爷，爸爸，三千块！再说你也没必要买普莉西啊。”

“莫非轮到我的女儿来对我横加指责了吗？”杰拉尔德咬文嚼字地大声说，“普莉西是个漂亮的小姑娘，所以——”

“我知道。她是个调皮的小笨蛋。”斯佳丽平静地说，并没有被父亲的吼叫给镇住，“你买她的唯一理由就是迪尔西求你买下她。”

杰拉尔德一听这话，一下像泄了气的皮球，显得很尴尬，做了善行让别人发现时，他总是这样。斯佳丽见父亲这么沉不住气，乐得哈哈大笑起来。

“是呀，这又怎么样？把迪尔西买过来，她天天念叨她的孩子，那买她有什么用？唉，我以后再不能让这地方的黑人娶别处的女人了。太贵了。好啦，走吧，闺女，咱回去吃饭吧。”

这时苍茫的暮色更浓重了，天边褪去了最后一抹青绿色。白天暖融融的春意渐渐消失，代之而来的是一股淡淡的凉意。可是斯佳丽磨磨蹭蹭，琢磨着怎么开口提起阿希礼的话题，才能不让杰拉尔德怀疑她的动机。这事有点儿棘手，因为斯佳丽骨子里并不精明，而父女俩在这方面又十分相像，杰拉尔德总能识破她那些苍白无力的借口，就像斯佳丽能轻易识破他的借口一样。而他这么做的时候一般都是直截了当。
