受了伤的自尊心和愤怒加在一块儿，抵消了一些痛苦。

“妈妈嫁给你的时候才十五岁，我都十六了。”斯佳丽这话把他噎回去了。

“你妈妈不一样，”杰拉尔德说，“她不像你这么轻率。我说，女儿，振作起来，下礼拜我带你去查尔斯顿，去看你尤拉莉姨妈，听听他们关于苏姆特堡的高谈阔论，差不多有一礼拜你就会把阿希礼忘干净。”

“他以为我是小孩儿。”斯佳丽心想，一时悲愤得说不出话来，“他拿个新玩具在我眼前晃动，就以为我能把摔肿的疼痛忘掉。”

从上文可以看出，美国南北战争之前的南方，男女青年可以自由恋爱，当然是指自身自由的男女青年，其家庭背景多是庄园主家庭。一般情况下都是男青年追求女青年，也有女青年追求男青年的，但如果被发现女青年追求男青年，而男青年并不接受，会被认为是件不体面的事，连女青年所在的家庭也会因此感到不体面。

Scarlett的父亲得知女儿是这种情况时，也是这么认为的，但他喜欢Scarlett，女儿如果坚持，他会努力顺女儿的心的。

Scarlett暗恋Ashley，Ashley是一个大庄园主的儿子，但Scarlett的父亲不认为Ashley有多好，不是Ashley人品不好，而是Ashley的一些模糊的特质让他觉得Scarlett若嫁给Ashley不会幸福。
